This position requires access to ITAR-controlled technical data and/or EAR controlled technology. The hiring process for this position will therefore include an export compliance assessment, which will include an assessment of U.S. person status. U.S. persons are defined by 22 CFR 120.62 and 15 CFR 772.1 to include U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, and people with asylee or refugee status.

Position Overview

The Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) is responsible for supporting the health and safety management needs at our Centerbrook and Norwich, CT facilities. Working under the direction of the Nalas EHS leadership, this role supports all administrative and operational requirements for chemical safety protocols. The CHO focuses on the execution of site-specific safety plans and serves as a technical resource for chemical handling and hazard mitigation. 


The Chemical Hygiene Officer ensures both facilities remain in compliance with the OSHA Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.1450). This role bridges laboratory and production environments to maintain consistent safety standards and regulatory compliance across the entire organization. They will support the document control process by assisting in the routine review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and change requests for accuracy. The Chemical Hygiene Officer will Conduct scheduled checks of safety equipment and engineering controls to verify they are operating within established parameters. The CHO will maintain a general awareness of evolving industry safety trends and best practices to support the facility's overall safety culture. 


This is a full-time onsite position. Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Qualifications

CHO Certification preferred or willingness to attain certification in position within 6-12 months. To be eligible for this exam, you must already meet the NRCC’s education requirements. Associate's degree with at least 2 years' experience in Chemical Health & Safety, or Bachelor's degree with at least one year experience in Chemical Health & Safety and 16 semester hours in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Health and safety sciences.


  • Computer skills required and proficiency in Microsoft Suite/365

  • Ability to learn new software

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multi-functional tasks

  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential

  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Experience or coursework related to safety and environmental; regulations and reporting preferred

  • Ability to maintain any necessary certifications (Hazwoper, DOT Shipping Chemicals, First Responder Awareness, etc.)

Primary Responsibilities

Compliance & Inspection

  • Perform regular safety audits of lab and storage areas, ensuring all safety equipment (e.g., fume hoods, eye wash stations) is functioning properly. Includes daily lab safety inspections

  • Keep standard Operating Procedure up to date and perform yearly validations

  • Inspect Hazardous Waste area weekly

  • Inspect Fire extinguishers, emergency lights, spill kits, PPE and first aid kits monthly

  • Provide a yearly chemical inventory

  • Sign hazardous waste manifest and keep on file

  • File biannual report to EPA

  • Keep all safety licenses up to date ( HazCom, TSCA, FIFRA etc.)

  • Ensuring the availability of proper PPE

  • Keep all lab consumables in stock

  • Distribute and manage required chemical exposure monitoring for OSHA regulated chemicals

  • Monitor Breakthrough of ductless hood carbon filters

  • Review all LRF’s for safety issues

  • Support the Industrial Hygiene program by staging monitoring equipment and organizing sampling records for review.


Training

  • Training employees on chemical safety procedures and the use of protective

  • equipment and keeping training requirements up to date.

  • Training new hires on basic lab safety

  • Assist in tracking and documenting all employee safety training

  • Provide and keep up to date all safety training PowerPoints


Logistics

  • Ship all outgoing Chemicals/Pipes

  • Schedule and assist with waste pickup

  • Check in all incoming chemical packages, update in Labspend and Monday Software

  • Coordinate routine chemical purges

  • Unpack and store all incoming chemicals

  • Assist in cleaning and organizing labware, storing of lab equipment


Administrative

  • Assist in organizing safety meetings

  • Assist in organizing Yearly Safety Standdown Meeting

  • Administer respiratory program including fit testing and medical evaluations

  • Assist in tracking TL status and keep TM/TL spreadsheet up to date

  • Integrate EH&S best practices into daily laboratory operations to foster a proactive safety culture and minimize workplace hazards

  • Assist in the administrative maintenance of chemical records and the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database to ensure documentation is organized and up to date.

  • Assist with all other shipping/receiving for front office support
