Nalas has been selected as the prime award winner for a Phase 2 STTR with The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) in continuation of our successful Phase 1 efforts! The forthcoming award will provide $1M in research funding to our research team under the Small Business Technical Transfer Program. Our team includes Professor Timothy Weihs’s research group at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and researchers at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Indian Head EOD Technology Division.
Under the Phase 1 effort, Nalas and JHU studied reactive mixtures and nanocomposite fuels previously developed by the Weihs Group. These fuel/oxidizer mixtures are uniquely able to simultaneously produce heat and biocidal iodine gas, a combination designed to destroy biological weapons of mass destruction. The team at Nalas focused on evaluating conditions for preparing Iodic acid (HI3O8) with control over particle size distribution, while the Weihs Group focused on studying how these fuel/oxidizer mixtures behave in small-scale testing. Under the forthcoming Phase II effort, the team aims to advance the development of these unique fuel/oxidizer materials to kilogram-scale production. Such quantities of material will enable continued formulation development and subsequent large-scale article testing. Successful large-scale demonstration will warrant establishment of a commercial process to HI3O8 at Nalas.
